When it comes to designing a space, for example a living room or bedroom, there’s always a little room for a bit of trial and error. You can always re-paint the walls, move around your furniture pieces, or even return those accent pieces that turned out to be hideous. With a bathroom, not so much. Once the remodel or renovation is finished, you’re typically stuck with what you chose. Unless, of course, you’re willing to put it even more work and effort to change it.
Thus, before you start any bathroom project, whether it’s on a new house on ipoh property or an old condominium remodel, it’s worth considering some common mistakes in design elements. Read on for some design elements that can potentially bring your bathroom down, and how you can avoid them for yourself.
Trying to squeeze too many elements into a small space
Let’s face it. Bathrooms are typically small spaces. Unless you’re living like a maharaja in a palace, your bathroom is probably as small as everyone else’s. As with any small space, one design concept is key: restraint. Restraint not just in what you put in your bathroom, but how you design your bathroom. Now, you may have a whole range of showstopping elements that you’d like to incorporate into your bathroom. However, do remember that you need to filter through all these ideas and choose only the best ones that fit your lifestyle, space and personality. Trying to cram in too many design elements in a small space just results in visual chaos, where lots of design elements are creating too much visual noise all concurrently. Instead, try to select one or two main elements and let the rest of the design play supporting roles. This gives your start design elements a chance to really become the focus of the space and to shine on their own.
Prioritizing pretty over practical
We’ve all been guilty of getting caught up in the beauty and fashion of design that we forget that the key focus should be on function. The bathroom is, after all, a practical and functional space. So, it is pertinent that you design it with function and practicality in mind. Firstly, before you choose any pieces, think about the maintenance to ensure that you will be as happy with your dream bathroom after five or so years as you are the day it is finished. For example, you might think that the glass tiles you want for your walls are beautiful, but are you still going to think so after they chip and crack when they can’t stand the test of everyday use? Whatever your answer is, try to keep function in mind above fashion. Hey, if you really still crave some of those extravagant but high maintenance design elements, try incorporating them in less high traffic areas such as the powder room. Then, they’ll have to be cleaned much less often and also be in a prime position to be admired by all of your guests!
Not paying attention to lighting
Lighting is a crucial element to any space, not just the bathroom. However, in the bathroom, it can be even more important, due to the sheer utilitarian nature of the bathroom. Nobody wants to get ready in a room with abysmal lighting. The fact is, bathrooms usually don’t get a of natural light, due to the lack of windows for privacy reasons. So, unless your bathroom receives tons of natural light, you’d want to think carefully about the lighting options. For example, to start, you need at least an overhead light, as well as some lights flanking the bathroom mirror, or one above it. You also need to think about choosing either warm or cool lighting, or maybe try mixing the two. You need to carefully consider all the types of lighting you’re adding, whether its general, task or accent lighting. Take heed, as all these lighting ideas will pay dividends in how your bathroom space functions and feels.
Not thinking about storage
No one ever complains about having too much storage space in the bathroom. However, the reverse is often heard. Perhaps you’ve always been lucky enough to always have a bathroom with more than enough storage space that it isn’t at the forefront of your mind when it comes to designing your own bathroom space. Even though the bathroom is a small room, there’s actually quite a lot of stuff that we keep in the bathroom. Not allotting enough storage space, or the right kind of storage space, can be a real pain down the road. You might end up with clutter all over your bathroom countertops, or things ending up not having their own place. So, you need to give your bathroom storage more thought and should try to incorporate plenty of storage space into the design of your bathroom. While you might take the easy way out and just add a couple of floating shelves and be done with it, it’s not always that easy. While that may be helpful, don’t forget that most people prefer a bit of privacy with their bathroom storage. You can consider including hidden storage, whether in the form of cabinets, or a medicine cabinet, or the vanity, the key idea is to keep things behind closed doors to safeguard your privacy and prevent your bathroom from becoming too cluttered.
I personally agree with you that lighting is very important. I am not going to spend a long time in a crammed space when it is too dim or poorly lit. It makes me feel utterly uncomfortable to say the least.
ReplyDeleteAs for pragmatic purposes, you are spot on when you mentioned we sometimes get carried away with looks more than its functional purpose. We need to ensure that our washrooms can last up for a very long time instead of being something temporary.

ReplyDeleteIn choosing a space it is best to choose with good natural lightings. Gloomy spaces are dull and look small.
ReplyDeleteIt's so true that one can never have enough of storage space in the bathroom, and shelves! Lighting is also very important, and mirrors. Haha... I am being carried away, need to go for practical vs. pretty!
